Spending the Day with John Carroll Kirby at Stones Throw Studios

John Carroll Kirby is more than an if-you-know-you-know musician (or your favorite artist’s favorite artist). Sure, he’s collaborated with a who’s who list of stars (Steve Lacy, Summer Walker, Kevin Abstract, Frank Ocean, Solange to name a few) but his solo work on Stones Throw Records is some of his most creative to date (I’m clearly biased).

I’ve been lucky enough to connect with Kirby on a number of projects including his album Blowout where I got a close up of his creative process. I directed and edited this live performance of “Oropendola” which had the internet guessing what exactly John was using to drop a beat (hint: we dusted off the first commercially released drum machine). Read more about the project here.

My Role: Director and editor of John Carroll Kirby’s “Oropendola” live performance video for YouTube and social media. Full digital rollout strategy (both organic and paid marketing), influencer and press outreach.
